CHARACTER INFORMATION
CHARACTER NAME: Prudence Blackwood (alias: Prudence Night, Weird Sister)
CANON: The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
TIMELINE: end of the last scene of part 3
AGE: unknown - could be 18, could be 25, could be 100, but she's definitely of age
REFERENCE: here
PERSONALITY: Prudence is a bitch, but it's not plain and simple.
To understand Prudence's personality you need a sense of where she came from. Until just...last year? Maybe the year prior, she was one of the Weird Sisters. The Weird Sisters were three orphans in the Church of Night, who had no support in any real capacity from the witch community of Greendale at large. It's not clear how long the Weird Sisters existed on the fringe of witch society in Greendale, but one thing was clear. She had two sisters to look out for, always, in a place that didn't have any safeguards for the parentless and those without close family ties. The Weird Sisters had to look out for themselves, and as the eldest and self-proclaimed leader, Prudence was and is willing to do anything to protect her sisters from harm.
With the revelation of her paternity, Prudence gained a new last name and also access to legitimized power. That legitimized power came in the form of learning that her father was the patriarch of the Church of Night and that her mother committed suicide because he refused to marry her, as opposed to her being a mere unimportant orphan like her two sisters. While this only came to light because of Sabrina and the Spellmans' scheming in an attempt to save Prudence's life (when she'd been fine with losing in this specific scenario) and not any sense of doing the right thing on her father's part, the fact that it was brought to light at all changed Prudence's standing within the community and her understanding of the possibilities of her future. It changed her relationship with power, and a lot of Prudence's personality is shaped by her relationship with power.
She flaunts what skills and abilities she has in the face of being told she can't, or shouldn't — Prudence and her sisters openly taunt mortals with magic when it's within their ability to safely do so without putting the entire coven at risk, they openly taunt Sabrina with their knowledge and magic period — but unlike Sabrina, Prudence has a strong sense of what repercussions she might have to reap in order to handle what she's sown. Part of this is age, as Prudence is definitely not just a teenager, but part of it is also a lack of access to privilege throughout her life.
What that relationship to power didn't change was Prudence's goals and focus, at least not for long. She was torn for a while between doing the right thing and doing the thing that would get her the most at the end; for someone who has lived a lifetime on the edge of powerlessness in a place where power, where bloodlines, are everything it makes sense that she'd struggle with this. She gave up access to her father's legitimized position of power once he attempted to kill the entire Chruch of Night in order to cover up his own misdeeds, and even after choosing her sisters and family over power in the end, she still struggles with it.
Prudence is always looking for a way to be on top. A way to successfully game whatever system she's being oppressed by, in order to force that system to provide her with what she needs to protect those she cares about. The thing is she doesn't care about many; mortals are definitely not on the list. Mostly that care and focus is limited to her sisters Agatha and Dorcas, but now that Dorcas is gone and Agatha has gone insane and is working with her father Faustus Blackwood, Prudence is stuck in a difficult place between building new relationships and burning down the world in order to fix what's wrong with it. She's not a 'good' person in the sense that she'd be interested in limiting any particular mortal's exposure to suffering — isn't suffering what mortality is all about, after all? — but she is a person with strong convictions and a stronger sense of retribution. She is not pure chaos, whipping through reality to change as much as possible, but she's not pure selfish evilness either.
Prudence is a woman who has a sense of the importance of family — found and blood alike — and a very developed understanding of what it takes to keep that family safe. She'll do it, whatever the cost.
So Prudence is a bitch, but she's a bitch who has priorities and doesn't like to rearrange them for anything or anyone.
